Yeesh - he was like a sulky kid just looking for an excuse to throw a wee tantrum. Jian Ghomeshi (who's one of my favourite Canadian media guys) did a good job of managing him. But poor everyone else having to put up with that - the rest of the band looked really uncomfortable.
wow. unbelievable. i was curious as to what they migh have said about this interview and found this article. honestly - i don't think the interviewer was in the wrong in merely just talking about the fact that billy-bob is an actor as well as a musician. he clearly didn't seem to have any intent in focusing the interview on that part of his career.
billy bob was just being such a complete immature brat. dude - grow up!
I love Jian, too. He's smart and funny and a great interviewer. I would have never thought I'd enjoy a radio program on culture and entertainment, and a prime time slot, no less, but he makes it interesting and relevant.
Yes, the other band members look like they want to crawl under the table. I wasn't sure if they were angry at Jian or BB, but giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming they're not giant a-holes like BB, I'll assume they were just really uncomfortable.
Oh my god. Does he WANT people to think he's getting senile? Cuz that's how it came off at the end. I think he's seen all the attention that Joaquin Phoenix is getting for being weird and so he wants to jump on that bandwagon. And dude? Your acting career does matter. Nobody would care if you weren't Billy Bob Thornton. What a jerk. Everybody in the world does not get to call himself an "artist" and turn into an ass on radio shows. He has totally changed my opinion of him...
I've been following this ridiculous drama, moreso because I listen to Q almost every day (benefits of a home office) and really felt bad for Gian. Did you hear how BBT and his band got booed at Massey Hall? Or how they've pulled out of the rest of Willie Nelson's concert tour? People have done spoofs on this on Youtube as well. At least Gian is getting lots of positive support, altho I'm sure he would have prefered to have had his profile raised by something other than having been on the receiving end of a celebrity hissy fit.
I haven't heard a clear explanation of what happened before the interview, in terms of those "instructions" to avoid mention of the acting. Jian said he wasn't instructed, and BBT's rep said that nobody was instructed, so did BBT just pull that out of thin air?
Either way, like you said, it was a brief mention in the intro that seemed to tick him off. No questions.
Yeah, seriously. It's such a pompous attitude. I love the part where he said "would you ask Tom Petty that?" regarding a question about being passionate about music, and Jian (the interviewer) goes "uh... yeah." lol.
I don't get to listen every day... was listening the next day, heard the last 3 seconds of the clip followed by a very tired-sounding Jian thanking everyone for the support and saying it had been a difficult and crazy 24 hours. He sounded so different than usual, so it got my attention.
Yes, pulled out of the remainder of the Canadian tour.
Did Jian say anything else about it on Thursday? Did he even host the show on Friday? I've been wanting to listen to the podcasts, but realistically, that won't be happening for awhile.
Ya, by Friday, he wasn't even mentioning it, and carried on like his old self. I think he's probably trying to take attention away from it, since it has gone so viral (even the Globe yesterday had a half-page on the whole deal). But he sounded like his light-hearted/overwrought self again.
